Statewide coalition calls on governor to act on immigrant driver licenses (MidHudson News)

ALBANY – A consortium of organizations across the state is urging Governor Cuomo to sign an executive order adopting implementing Green Light NY, which grants access to driver’s licenses for immigrant New Yorkers.

Ignacio Acevedo, lead organizer for Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson, said it is particularly important for the governor to take action now.

“This is timely because the State of New Jersey is about to pass it, so we are asking the governor if other states who are neighbors are doing this, New York State should be leading the fight and we are asking the governor to make an executive decision,” Acevedo said. “At the same time we are going to continue to work to make sure that it passes as a law, but in the meantime, we must do something to protect all residents in the State of New York.”

The Assembly and Senate previously rejected the proposal.

In addition to Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson, other groups in the coalition include the Worker Justice Center of New York, The Worker Center of Central New York, Columbia County Sanctuary movement, Minkwon Center for Community Action, and Make the Road New York.
